Why I Love Shooting Newborn Photography with Family
If there is one type of session that is my absolute favorite, it’s newborn photography with family. I love all newborn sessions and all family sessions – but there is something so tender, special and soul stirring about getting to shoot newborn photography with the whole family. Getting to see big brothers and sisters love their new baby sibling is literally the sweetest thing on this earth.
The Best Tips for Shooting Newborn Photography with Family
When I am shooting a newborn session with family, I always do a few things to make sure that we have the best experience! First, I always try to connect with the kids and get to know their names and make them feel comfortable. I have 3 kids myself (ages 5, 3 and 1), so I have been there, and really enjoy interacting with kids! And in a past life, I used to create curriculum for kids – so I love connecting with children. You’ll find that during most of the session, I’ll probably talk to your kids more than I talk to you, because I’m trying to get them onboard and excited! If they are enjoying themselves and want to participate, the session will be so much smoother for your whole family.

Consider Your Toddler’s Needs When Shooting Newborn Photography with Family
It’s so easy to think about what your newborn needs during the session (which we 10000% should consider!), that we can overlook your toddler and smaller kids needs too. I always highly recommend giving your toddler their favorite meal or snack before the session. Having a full tummy, will make them way more engaged participants than if they are hungry and grumpy. You can always keep mess-free snacks nearby for bribing during the session, too. Although, it’s less about posing or behaving perfectly, and more about your family connection. We can always take a break or try a different activity if needed, but this is just a relaxed time at home with your family. No perfect toddlers needed.
Activities To Try During Your Newborn Photography with Family
If we are shooting a newborn session with a first baby, that experience will look completely different than if we are shooting newborn photography with family. When the baby is the only child, it will be a very chill, quiet and calm session. When there is the whole family involved – I always expect a little chaos. That’s great, though! I love that! There is so much more variety, more love, and more fun! Instead of “let’s stand here and smile at the camera” I will walk you through some activities you can do together as a family. I have a questionnaire I’ll send your way (and we’ll hop on a couple of calls together too!) and that will help me to understand and know your family. Perhaps you guys love to make pizza together every Friday night, or make blueberry pancakes every Saturday morning – these are things we should do during your session! I don’t want a “random” activity, I want us to do something that is special and important to you! Not only will this help your photos to feel like your family in the most authentic way – but how special would it be to have those traditions and special moments captured?

Just Relax During Your Newborn Photography With Family
I know it’s easier said than done (trust me, I’ve been there!), but if you relax and enjoy your time just being a family, you will not only have a ton of fun, but you will have better photos, too! It’s easy to stress and worry about how it’s going, but I have it under control! If you are correcting your kids, worrying about how it’s going, or trying to get them to behave a certain way, that will just stress everyone out. But if you just enjoy and play and have fun – you will get amazing images that truly showcase your family’s love!
Choose a Photographer You Trust For Your Newborn Photography with Family
When it comes to selecting a photographer for your session, make sure you go with someone you trust and has the experience behind the camera. I have been shooting professional for 15 years and have shot hundreds of clients. I’m also a mother myself, so I know how it feels to be a mom looking for a photographer. I promise to give you the best experience I can – and that you will have feel safe and confident in front of the camera.
