If you’re unsure what to wear for summer maternity photos – this post will help to answer all of your questions! You have been pinning maternity photos for months, and almost every image you love was taken in that golden hour light. But then reality hits: your due date is in August. You are already warm all the time, your ankles are not your friends right now, and the idea of standing in a field at 6 PM in July sounds a lot less dreamy than it did on Pinterest. Here is the thing though: summer maternity sessions are lovely and when we shoot in the comfort of your own home, it makes it even easier.
Why Does Summer Change Everything About Maternity Session Style?
When you’re hot and uncomfortable, you want the outfit that feels the easiest. When you’re choosing what to wear for summer maternity photos – I think instead of picking the outfit that doesn’t feel like you – you should choose the outfit that does! Even if that is more casual, that is ok. I think we have gotten away from photos that feel like us in the name of art or beautiful photos (and trust me, I love a tulle dress as much as the next person!), but you know what photos really stand the test of time? That ones that truly reflect who you are as a mother and as a family. So here I am, giving you permission to dress like yourself!
Can an Indoor Session Help You Beat the Summer Heat?
Absolutely. While shooting “in home” doesn’t mean we have to stay inside the whole time, we absolutely can if we need to! We can also do some cooling down in your backyard with sprinklers, a cute little pool or anything else that sounds refreshing! That’s the beauty of shooting at home – we can do whatever we want 🙂
How to Stay Cool During a Summer Maternity Session
I highly recommend wearing something easy and light. So that could be shorts, a linen top – whatever sounds and feels cool to you. This is your session – and comfortable is so important at this time in your pregnancy. Also, if you feel uncomfortable, that will show up in your photos. So comfort should be your defining factor when choosing your outfit. Comfortable doesn’t mean uncute though! I am so happy to offer you guidance on what to wear that will look great while also keeping you cool at the same time. If you just love being outside in the summer heat (trust me, I know some crazies like that!) then maybe this is a pointless subject for you. But if you’re like the rest of us average folk, then planning some fun water activities can help! A dip in your family pool, a blow up kiddie pool, a sprinkler or hose, ice cream or popsicles – all make for some fun photos and help to keep you cool at the same time! If you’d like to incorporate an activity but are unsure, let’s chat! I have a bunch of ideas we can do 🙂
What Should Husbands and Kids Wear for Summer Photos?
Comfort is the name of the game for them too! Kids (and husbands!) have more fun during family photos if they are wearing something that is comfortable for them as well. If your kid wants to run around in a swimsuit, diaper or cape – I have no problem with that 🙂
Where Are Some of My Favorite Places to Shop for Summer Maternity Photo Outfits?
OOooh yes the good stuff! I love looking at clothes and I love giving advice on what to wear for a session. Here are some of my favorite stores, but if you need help with specific pieces or colors – I can help with that as well.
For Everyone: I adore Zara. If there is only one place you could shop for your session – it would be here!
For Kids: H & M has some super cute options as well!
For Dads: I am always a sucker for Banana Republic. Old Navy has some good options too!
For Moms: It really depends on what you are looking for – but Zara, Quince, and Gap are some of my favorites!
