Why Should I Plan Out When to Book Newborn Photos?
Some of us are planners and like to have everything written down in a planner, notebook or an excel spreadsheet months in advance. Others of us like to go with the flow and decide based on how we are feeling. If you are in the 2nd group, you might wonder why we even need to be talking about when to book newborn photos. You might thinking: My baby isn’t even here yet! Why do I need to plan this now?
If you’re a planner, you might have already checked this off of your task list, or perhaps you’re here reading this because you are planning now! Whatever planning (or lack thereof) personality you have, everyone should figure out when to book newborn photos. I’m here to help make it easy and give you all the insight. So read away, friend!

When To Book Newborn Photos Based Off Of Your Due Date
I highly recommend booking your newborn photos early! However, as a mom of loss myself, I understand wanting to wait a bit and not too make plans too early as well. I think a sweet spot is at the end of your first trimester or the beginning of your second. Of course sooner or later works too, but that is what I’ve found to be the perfect time.
Booking your newborn photographer at this point, allows you to have your first choice of photographer, think through dates, locations, and outfits. Most photographers (myself included) only take on a limited amount of sessions per month, so once we are full, we can’t take any other clients on. It hurts my heart so much when I have to tell a potential client that my calendar is too full to take on any new sessions that month.

When To Book Newborn Photos Based Off Of Your Maternity Photos
Another thing to consider when you are thinking about when to book newborn photos is to decide if you’d like maternity photos. I recommend shooting your maternity session between 28-34 weeks pregnant, so you’ll want to take that into consideration. Often, a lot of expectation mamas like to work with the same photographer for both their newborn and maternity photos. So you will want to leave time to find the right photographer, plan out your maternity session in the perfect window and then have them lined up for your newborn photos, too.

When To Book Newborn Photos Based Off Of Your Photographer Research
Start the research on your newborn photographer early. Hopefully, if you’re reading this blog post, you’re doing just that 🙂 If you’re unsure if it’s too early or late to get on a photographer’s books – just ask! I’d be happy to guide you on the best time to book and all of the details. It’s never too early to researching and thinking through these details! Most photographers fill up their calendar quickly, so the sooner you can lock one in, the better! You don’t want to miss out on your first choice simply because you didn’t inquire soon enough.

Why Figuring Out When To Book Your Newborn Photos Early Helps Make Your Postpartum Journey Better
If you’re thinking about when to book your newborn photos so that you end up with the best stress-free experience, then I’d advise you to do it now! You don’t want to be thinking about photos, photographers, outfits or anything else when you’ve just given birth. You want to be able to focus on your new baby and your family. If you’ve already booked your photographer, you can just rest easy. The hard part is already done!
When you’ve already locked in your photographer early, then you can start planning potential dates, locations and outfits. I include outfit planning as part of my session experience. I also spend a lot of time help you to plan! My style of photography leans more documentary, so I love for us to include an activity that is part of your weekly routine. Whether you spend every Saturday making pancakes together, or every evening going for a walk – I want to know those details and include them in your session. When we are already confirmed because you planned out when to book your newborn photos – then we have time to talk about all those meaningful pieces of your session.
I don’t know about you, but last minute planning stresses me out! When you realize when to book newborn photos and how that helps you feel less stressed – then we can plan and figure out all of the details before your due date. Then I just have to show up!

Frequently Asked Questions
Why Should I Know When To Book My Newborn Photos?
Knowing that the best time to book your newborn photos is at the end of your 1st trimester or the beginning of your 2nd, then it allows you to find your preferred photographer, plan out your outfits and family activities for your session. It also takes a lot of stress off of your plate!
If I Book My Newborn Photographer In Advance, When Will We Take Our Newborn Photos?
If you’ve planned out when to book your newborn photos – but still are waiting for your baby to arrive to choose a specific date with your photographer, then I recommend taking your newborn photos within the first two weeks (but only if you’re up for it!). Babies change and grow so much in the beginning that the first two weeks allows us to get some of the tiniest features before the change too much.
What If I Planned When To Book My Newborn Photos, But Had A Really Rough Birth Experience?
First off, I’m so sorry you had a tough birth experience. After giving birth 3 times, I’ve also had tough births, too. How you’re feeling and your baby is feeling is the top priority! After more than a decade of professional experience, I am confident we can still give you amazing photos whether baby is 2 days or 2 months old. You focus on feeling well, mama, and let me worry about the rest.
